Dear Parent/Guardian,

Your child will be writing a persuasive letter during the month of December. Please have them write down one thing that thy want more than anything for Christmas and bring it to school on Wednesday, December 5. Example: Shrek the 3rd DVD

Thank you,

Miss Rankin.

Beginning in January, you will find on our website a monthly writing calendar as well. This will have suggested writing ideas that you can use at any time if your child is having trouble thinking of something to write about in their Writing Log.

Look at this computer site for math games and activities that are directly related to what your child is learning at school.

www.mathK8.nelson.com

Go to the mathematics-companion site, Nelson mathematics 2 (Teacher), "Surf for more math".

Dear Parents,

We are about to begin another wonderful and memorable year at Brigden Public School! My name is Mrs. Blair and I will be teaching your child Language Arts during the morning this year. Miss Rankin will be teaching our class math, social studies, physical education and the arts, in the afternoons. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome your child into our classroom. Likewise, I would like to welcome you as well since you will be a big part of your childs learning this year.

Getting to Know You

I have included a form with this letter called Getting To Know Your Child. Please fill this out so that we can better support your child through their transition into this grade. The first week of school will be filled with activities that will help us to learn about your childs needs and talents.

Physical Education

Our class will be having some form of physical education every day. Each child will need a pair of inexpensive, non-marking gym shoes to be brought to school and left here for him/her to wear inside the school and in the gym. Please try to send this extra pair of shoes to school as soon as possible.

Monthly Calendar

In your student planner, there are monthly calendars. Each months calendar will be filled in during the first week of the month with activities and projects that are specific to our class. Watch for these calendars so that you and your child will both know what to look forward to in our class!

We will also write in the daily portions of our planner anything that might come up in the course of our learning that needs finishing or special attention. As well, the planner will be used to write notes to the parents from the teachers. Parents are also encouraged to write notes to the teacher here as well. I will check the planners on Monday and Friday mornings but students are responsible to bring me the planner to see notes that are sent mid-week.

Homework Folders

Students will be bringing home their homework folders everyday and in it will be included their Working with Words activity sheet, a writing activity, and math activity for the week. The activities in the homework folder are designed to continue the students learning and to strengthen the skills that they are developing in school. It is also meant to foster better communication between the school and the home. Please check it nightly. On Friday, I will check their homework checklist to see how they did for the week. Parents are asked to check off the assignments that have been completed for the week and initial the row. One row is for each week.

Each week, every student is asked to:

complete their Working With Words activity sheet

(We will take it up on Friday so please make sure it is returned.)

write in their Writing Log at home. Please remember to put the date at the top of each new entry. Students can continue working on a writing piece (story, list, poem, letter) for more than one night to add more detail or edit it. Finished pieces can be shared with the class. We would LOVE it!

Also, 1 writing skill activity will be sent home each week. This may be as a worksheet or part of a workbook. Please make sure the workbook is returned to class.

c) read for 10 minutes or more for at least 3 nights during the week

d) complete the math activity sent home for the week

There will be no homework on Fridays or the weekend unless the students have a project to complete.

Book Orders

Book orders will be sent home each month and the calendar will let you know when the last order will be taken for the month. If you choose to order some books, you can send cash or write a cheque to Scholastic. Thank you.

Help

Students are asked to bring in a box of Kleenex for classroom use. Thank you for your help!

Lets Get Started!!

Please feel free to contact us at school if you have any questions or concerns now or during the year. Miss Rankin or I will attempt to contact you if we have any concerns as well.

I am really looking forward to an exciting year of learning. I hope you are too.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Blair
