Welcome to a new school year. I am looking forward to an exciting year of
learning and growing with your child. It
truly is a privilege for me to work with your child(ren) this year. We have a lot
to learn, so we will all have to work together.
My goal is to create a comfortable learning environment that is fair,
fun, and challenging. I know that we will be able to meet our goals as long as we
keep lines of communication open between us.
Please never hesitate to share your concerns or questions.
Our Grade 5 class is made up of 28 students. Some subjects will be taught through a rotary schedule.

As
a way to develop valuable organizational skills, students will once again
receive a student planner. Your child will record any homework assignments in
his/her planner. If possible, please write any communication in the planner as I
will be checking student planners on a daily basis. You can assist in the
effectiveness of this tool by checking the planner each night and ensuring it
accompanies your child to school every day.
Any updated homework assignments will also be posted on our class web page. http://brigden.lkdsb.net/ Look under classes and select Grade 5.
Getting Started
Language Arts
The Language Arts program strives to connect reading and writing across the
curriculum. This term, students will read a variety of fiction and non fiction
literature, including stories and poems from the Collections , Skyrider, and
Momentum reading series, and individualised reading selections.
Mathematics
The math curriculum for Grade Five continues to emphasize problem-solving
skills. Students learn a variety of strategies to help them understand and solve
complex problems. A variety of Problem solving strategies will be introduced
throughout the term. A “Problem of the Week” question will be assigned for
homework on Monday and due each Friday. The Nelson Mathematics textbook will be
used in combination with a variety of supplementary texts. Check our class
website for an overview of the current unit of study and suggested at home
activities.
Social Studies
During the first half of the year students will explore Canadian immigration,
rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizenship, functions and interactions
of different levels of government in Canada and the electoral process. In
October our class will be participating in the Ontario Student Vote Program. (
