Our Alphabet Sounds Song
(tune: " ‘A’ You’re Adorable" by Sharon, Lois and Bram)
Sing the name of each letter once, and then there are several repetitions of the sound that the letter makes. While singing, we do an action for something that corresponds to this sound. Below are descriptions of the actions we use for each letter. Your child will be able to give you the apporximate tune and the number of repetitions of the sound of each letter. (Note: we use the short sound for all vowels). The song starts: "A, ah ah ah ah ah; B, buh buh buh buh buh; C ....." We learned the song three new letters at a time, and then added that to what we already know until we had it down.
A -
an ant crawling up your legB - bounce a ball
C - make cat ears on your head
D - playing a drum
E - crack an egg
F - put hands together and make a wiggling motion like a fish swimming
G - the gurgling sound a bathtub makes when you pull the stopper - point your finger downwards in a spiraling motion
H - hands flat and sloped like a roof of a house, middle fingers meet
I - wipe hands off each other as if something "icky" is on them
J - pretend to juggle
K - palms together, hands fly upward in a wiggling motion like a kite flying
L - for love, cross your hands over your heart
M - for mouth, point to it
N - for nose, point to it
O - for "off" and "on"; with your index finger, make a motion as if you are turning off a light switch
P - for popcorn - repeatedly close your fists and then pop them open
Q - for quacking ducks: make beaks with each hand and open/close them
R - for race car - pretend to hold a steering wheel
S - palms together, make a curving motion like a slithering snake
T - for tornado - point your finger downward in a spiraling motion
U - for up - point finger upwards
V -for violin - pretend to play one
W - for wind- make a "blowing" motion with full arm movements
X - this sound is too confusing so we just cross our arms in the air to make an "X"
Y - for yo-yo - pretend to play with one
Z -for zipper - pretend to zip up your coat (with much enthusiasm because the song is over!)
