MEETING CONVENED AT 7:00 P.M. NANCY BLANDFORD-MCFADDEN PRESIDING

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION

Nancy welcomed everyone to the first school council meeting for the year. She noted that we would be meeting in room 8 instead of room 2 because of the set up of the room.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

A motion was made by Lisa Walsh to approve the minutes of the June 6, 2006 school council meeting.

ADOPTION OF AGENDA ITEMS

A motion was made by Stacey Hillman adopting the agenda items.

CORRESPONDENCE ITEMS

A bullying brochure and director’s report were sent out to all that were in attendance to look at and read at their convenience.

PARENT ASSOCIATION REPORT

Self Esteem Program Grade 5 to start next Wed. for 6 weeks

Norcard forms sent out to all students, TOPS and plants in spring for fundraising this year. A roasting machine was purchased to help with hot dog days. A minimal cost of $60.00 was spent to purchase this.

ELECTION OF COUNCIL POSITIONS

Carla Campbell was asked to be Chairperson for the year by Principal Nancy Blandford-McFadden. Carla then asked Tony Steadman to be Co-chairperson, and both accepted these positions. Leah Withers has taken the position as secretary.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Construction update: good changes were made during the summer, new windows, lights and entries were installed, and the boiler is going to be replaced. Nancy thanked Karen and her team for getting the school cleaned and ready for students after the construction was finished.

Calendar Cards: received in newsletter sent home to parents.

O Canada and Pledge Annual Review: School to resume singing O Canada at the beginning of each school day. The council has decided to not say the pledge.

A concern was brought up by Tony Steadman concerning the pledge being recited on Sept. 11. Tony was told to see Gail Stucke Director of education or Penny Daniels concerning the protocol for this special day.

Planners: Planners are given to all student grade 2 and above.

Concern was brought up by Lori Kozera about students taking the planner with them on their classroom rotation. Nancy said she would tell students to take to each class and to write all assignments given by teacher into their planner and/or the rotary teacher will record the assignments/tests/homework due on the classroom homework board. Students need to be in better communication with their homeroom teacher.

Dress Code: this is reviewed annually, and is applicable to staff as well as students. They pattern their dress code after that of LCCVI.

Spirit Wear: the spirit wear from the Meet the Teacher BBQ was well received. 13 orders were placed that night as well as 37 handed in later. More spirit wear to come in Feb.

Staff Update: every class is split except for Grade 2. Hard Caps have been placed on the board by the ministry, with nothing over 20 students per class. Mrs. Holmes has gone to Sir John Moore. It was asked how many students we have registered, 203 students with FTE of 208.

NEW BUSINESS

Two new PA days for the school year are on Nov. 17 and Apr. 27. These days are to be spent on literacy and numeracy. School Council Meetings are to be held on the first Wed. of said months, Nov. 1, Feb. 7, Apr. 4 and June 6 held in room 8.

PUBLIC INPUT

Concern was brought up by Stacey Hillman about finding a sub Principal instead finding a substitute teacher for Mr. Padbury. Nancy said that they would try to get the same substitute everytime when she is at her meetings. Those who are affected should talk to Mr. Padbury.

NEXT MEETING

November 1, 2006 in room 8.
